Happy Valentine’s Day

 Another Year, Another Milestone . . .

Here at the farm we are always looking to the future to see what new avenues there are for our horses.  2007 was right on target.

Early in the year, we didn’t know what to expect at the Three Phase Event.  We didn’t have any experience in dressage even though we trail ride and feel that trail obstacle is a strong area of competition for us.  Well, Erin and Robert jumped right in and started learning all they could about dressage.  They took some lessons and went on to do well in the competition.  Erin even competed successfully at gaited dressage shows and won.  This year we’ll add Charlie and Kevin to our Three Phase line-up.  I think Charlie’s glad he’s got a built in dressage trainer at home <G>.

As I wrote last month, Barb’s Stormy Knight has been inducted into the AGMH Hall of Fame.  What an honor!  We have thoroughly enjoyed Stormy every step of the way.  He also won the Western World Grand Championship this year. . . another milestone for us.   Way to go Don and Nancy.  He could have never attained this level without your support and dedication.  Another horse that elevated our training program in 2007 and allowed us to achieve another milestone was Robert’s Rockin’ Rosey owned by Doug and Jill Drenik.  She won the 3 and 4 year old Open Park World Grand Championship. . . our first World Grand Championship in the Park division.  Congratulations Charlie on this fabulous accomplishment.

In 2008, we’ll once again be trying something new.  The Equine Affaire in Columbus, OH will be offering an Extreme Cowboy Race.  We have to make application and be selected  -  only 40 horses will be competing.  They will be from all breeds and disciplines.  We’re hoping to be included in the race.  Videos will be submitted for approval by the end of Feb.  We’ll let you know how we do.   Wish us luck!

Certainly a milestone for us this year, will be the construction of the new arena.  We have found the contractors we need but we are waiting on the weather to improve before we can get to work.  Let us know what type of activities you’d like to see once the arena is ready.   We’ll be able to have clinics and ride to our heart’s content regardless of the weather.  Woo Hoo!  Thank you for being part of the wonderful milestones in our lives!

2008 UMH Banquet

Congratulations to everyone on their 2007 awards!  At the banquet, honors went to many different farms and exhibitors.  Steve Heuslein, the Copland’s, the Brummer’s, the Morgan’s, Van Bert Farms, Carolyn Kenton and many others deserved  their pat on the back for all the contributions to the Kentucky Equestrian Center.  Robert was given a plaque to honor his 6 years of service on the UMH Board.  Don has now taken his place.  Robert and I were given the Volunteer Award for 2007.  Carolyn Kenton was honored for her work with the Three Phase Event as well. The Southeast Club brought beautiful crystal awards for their high point program.  Congratulations Silver!  Pal Porter was the winner of the cart even though Nancy Copland hung in there to the end.   Watch for the UMH magazine for all the details.

After the ceremonies, there was dancing and much whooping and hollering.  Kevin and Charlie got into the act.  Our new grandbaby even had his/her first dance. I believe there’s a  video out there ‘somewhere’ with the incriminating evidence that might just come in handy at an opportune time <G>.

Thank You Barrie!

We want to send a very special thank you to Barrie Hughes for the beautiful portrait of Sandman.  What a talent she has!  She did a great job of capturing that “Sandman look.”  Now as I work at the dining room table, he is there watching.  Thanks again, Barrie for your thoughtfulness and generosity.  We also want to welcome Scott and Barrie’s colt, Sonny, for training.  He’s a handsome three year red  chocolate colt by Sam’son.

Ella

One of the joys of our life is to introduce  little ones to the pleasure of riding horses.  James and Rachel have come to love it and Don and Nancy’s granddaughter, Ella has as well.  Last month, Robert had the honor of assisting Ella on her first solo ride.  She was thrilled and told everyone that she “rode all by myself.”  I don’t know who was more excited Robert or Nancy.  Ella is riding China, a sweet little mare who belongs to Don and Nancy.  It looks like she’s hooked.  What fun we’ll have with Ella at the shows!

Congratulations to our UMH High Point Winners

Moving Back to PA

Susan Kline, owner of Precious Ray of Hope, is returning to her former home in Pennsylvania.  She had bought a small farm near Rick and Laurie in Menifee County which is now for sale.  We’ll miss Susie but wish her well.

Brenda & Larry

We went to visit Brenda and Larry Watson in Leander, just after the first of the year.  We bought a beautiful gray roan gelding from them (Nate).  We also brought Mandy back with us.  She’s a cute little chocolate filly.  Brenda already had her started.  We appreciate these good friends and their great horses.

Violent Storms

Violent storms came tearing across the southern states late Tuesday night leaving a path of destruction.  Over 50 lives have been lost in KY, TN, AR, MS, and AL.   There has also been millions of dollars worth of damage all across the south.

While Stoner Ridge Farm itself was spared any great damage (a few shingles blown from the house), many of our Mountain Horse friends were not so fortunate.   As many of you know, Jessica Shannon and her family were working to build a new training barn.  When the winds came through, they destroyed the barn that was in progress, a tobacco barn, a shed, and the roof off the greenhouse.  Fortunately, the house was spared as was a small barn that had 3 or 4 horses in it.  We understand they were insured for part of the loss.  Our hearts go out to them . . .

New Jersey Clinic

“Foundation First”

Saturday  -  March 15, 2008   10:00 A.M.

Alexandria Park in Milford, NJ

“Robert Lawson of Paris, KY, a highly respected and successful horse trainer, will present his “Foundation First” clinic on March 15, 2008.  This Award Winning 2005 Trainer of the Year, will demonstrate his training methods by using several broke horses at different levels of discipline. In the afternoon session, Clinician Robert Lawson, will continue to educate auditors by demonstrating how to train your horse to safely navigate various types of obstacles found on the trail.  Whether you have a weanling, a mature horse, or something in between, the information that you learn from the “Foundation First” clinic will create a more solid and safer ride for you and your horse.  The clinic is hosted by the Alexandria Equestrian Association and presented by the Northeast Mountain Horse Club.  Contact Pam or Randy Smith for information:  717.266.2137.”

Flu Season

The newsletter and invoices have been delayed this month due to illness.

Hopefully, I am on the mend and will be up to par soon.

Thank you for your patience.

Horse Show Contributions Help Trainers

The Ladies Auxiliary voted at our last meeting to make contributions to trainers who were injured or ill.  Justin Spencer and Dougie Spears both had experienced broken bones and were unable to ride for a period of time.  Jessica Shannon had been hospitalized with a severe infection.  Thank you to everyone who contributes in the form of sponsorships or entry fees at our horse shows.  Funds go to help communities and civic projects as well as to provide assistance where there is a need.  Thank you for giving so generously.

Remember to renew your association memberships for 2008.

Riders cards are now required for UMH before horses may be shown.
