The show season got off to a great start at the Al Prewitt Memorial in Asheville, NC on March 9th and 10th (each day counted as one show). It was great to get together and show horses again after a long, cold winter. We were glad Doug & Jill and Nancy Copland were all able to go with us to see their horses perform. We were joined by the Stutman family—Randall, Linda, and Benjamin.

There were some outstanding performances. Congratulations to first place winners:

The SE Club members had a great staff of volunteers who were eager to assist. The show turned out to be a profitable one for them and we all had a great time.

The third show of the season was last week - The Carson Masters Spring Premier sponsored this year by UMH. Even though the warm-up area is small, the Western KY Exposition Center is a great place to show horses. Once again, several of our clients were able to go with us and help out. We want to thank Nancy for being the early bird and watering and feeding hay for us in the mornings. We missed Doug & Jill but enjoyed having Steve Heuslein from MN this trip. We had a great show winning 11 blue ribbons and placing reserve and third in the Versatility competition. Congratulations to the these first place winners:

Trainers’ Challenge 2007

If you haven’t seen it, it is hard to believe what can be accomplished with a young horse in as little as three hours! The five competitors this year, Charlie DeAtley, Brian Crowe, Chris Tipton, Nathan Green, and Eddy Landers, outdid themselves with exceptional round pen techniques. They worked to gain not only horses’ trust but their respect as well. Our judge John Lyons Certified Trainer, Tracy Young (see related article p. 2) was impressed with the level of expertise for all competitors. Horses were scored in two sessions plus the trail obstacle. Charlie, Brian, and Eddy all received full points for the level of difficulty for their horses. While the points remained close with 250 points possible there is opportunity for quite a spread. Charlie had the most points for round 2. Only two trainers received full points for their trail obstacle performance—Chris and Charlie with Brian two points behind perfect. When the day’s points were totaled, Chris Tipton was the over all winner with Charlie only 2 points behind and Brian placing third. It was a great competition. Congratulations fellas!

Tracy Young Conducts Clinic

“Every horse has a question mark in the middle of her forehead. ‘Is he going to smack me?’
When I leave and then come back to her, it erases the question mark.”
                                                                                    Tracy Young

Our Trainers’ Challenge was judged this year by Certified John Lyons Trainer, Tracy Young from Xenia, OH. Tracy did a great job presenting helpful techniques on how to bring your horse back from being laid up for the winter and how to put “Power Steering” on your horse.

Nancy and Frank Puckett allowed us to take their mare, Cappy Beth, to use for demonstration. She’d been turned out this winter but had always been good natured so she was a perfect demo horse. Tracy started by ‘sacking her out’ which only means desensitizing her. First he used his hand to simply rub all over her. Then he progressed to using a lariat, rubbing the rope on BOTH sides, up and down over her ribs, neck, and even her head. He made sure to touch her ears knowing that the bridle would be coming. All the while he was in the round pen working with Cappy, he was giving us pointers on helping her to stay focused on him. He didn’t want her to leave or direct her attention off him. When she did lose focus, he asked her to move off. It didn’t take much at all to redirect her. Tracy continued the sacking out making sure he erased the question mark (see quote to the left). He commented that good training can be boring. Then he said, “The older I get the more boring I like for it to be.” Isn’t that the truth for all of us <G>?

Next Tracy moved to using a Navajo blanket. At first it was folded. If she moved her head, he put pressure on her hip to turn her toward him. He again rubbed her all over before opening the blanket and beginning again. “A horse,” he said, “can’t really tell if it is a blanket or a saddle because they don’t have good depth perception. By using the open blanket, I better prepare her for the saddle.” Cappy Beth looked like she was at the spa . . . all that rubbing and desensitizing. I think she had a great time.

Finally Tracy used a paper feed sack. He made the comment that when he opened his trail map while on his horse's back, he didn’t want there to be a problem. He rubbed her again, all over, on BOTH sides. Then he let the bag fall from her back to the ground—a good move because who hasn’t dropped something off their horse’s back on the trail. Cappy did a great job coming back. More tips from Tracy’s clinic will be available in the April newsletter . . . stay tuned.

Big South Fork

The Stoner Ridge Farm crew plans to leave the farm about 10:00 A.M. on Thursday, May 3 heading toward Oneida, TN and Wilderness Resorts. Those of you who have made plans to go with us know, we’ll be staying at the Holly Patch cabin. It is the first one on the right as you enter the resort. Erin and Laurie will be taking care of meals Thurs. and Friday. If you have allergies, let us know. I’ll try to send most of what we need but you can help by bringing drinks, snacks, and anything you want to take on the trail to eat. Give us a call to confirm which horses you’d like to take. We are limited on stall space so we’ll probably need to take only one horse per rider unless something changes. We are all looking forward to having a great time. Frank and Nancy Puckett are planning to stay in their cabin. Lots of festivities are planned. I can’t wait to enjoy a few days in the woods.

Welcome

We want to welcome Harold Brown from Abbottsville, PA and his 8 yo gelding, A Tribute to Hank (Chester). We’d also like to welcome Joseph Giorgio also from PA and his 3 yo gelding, Poco Loco. We are looking forward to working these horses and getting to know these fine folks better.

Prayers Needed

Please keep Kelly Crowe, Brian’s wife, and the family in your prayers. Kelly will undergo brain surgery on April 26th. While it is serious the prognosis is good for a complete recovery.

Welcome
Back

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you

Thanks so much for your support! We couldn’t miss how many of our clients and friends have helped support the shows with their sponsorships! UMH show proceeds go to help support many facets and causes. Other shows always have important community needs that shows support (school sports programs, Lions Clubs, Relay for Life etc.). Thanks again for all you do!!
