Happy New Year
What a Year!
January gives us a great opportunity to look forward, to set new goals, and to dream new dreams. It is also a great time to reflect.
As we look back over 2006, it was quite a year! It was in January last year that Don and Nancy along with Robert and I bought Merry Go Blue - a reserve Classic World Grand Champion. We were impressed by his gait, temperament, and stride. How thrilling it was to see him step it up a notch to become the Classic World Grand Champion in 2006.
Silver Sundown, owned by Steve Heuslein, was another horse that we really enjoyed watching develop this year. Under Erin’s guiding hand he became a strong competitor in the 3 year old classic class and he has placed reserve in the UMH High Points. I was also fortunate to win the Amateur Classic High Point with him as my mount. We can’t wait to see his first off-spring in March.
Sandman was a tough competitor this year as well. Charlie rode him to receive the UMH Stallions Park High Point award and reserve in the Park Championship. He has so much to offer the breed. We have his first foal, Sands of Time, under saddle and he’s doing great. It looks like he will be a solid classic horse. We hope to show him at the Spring Premier.
Our first canter horse, Pepper’s Just Plain Pretty (owned by Don and Nancy), took top honors in 2006. Not only was she a World Grand Champion, she was the recipient of the UMH High Point winner as well. Pepper also made a strong showing in versatility competitions. She won the blue in both the KMSHA and RMH International Western classes.
Gaitway’s Jasmine Joy, who also belongs to Steve, was shown in many divisions this year. She rose to the top in the conformation class for 2 and 3 year olds under Robert’s direction to win the UMH High Point award.
Another great three year old, My Best Friend Gail, had a wonderful season. As a versatility horse she competed in many divisions winning in Western, Trail Obstacle, and under saddle divisions. At the KMSHA International she was the reserve Al Prewitt Versatility Award winner, winner of the 3 yo Filly Trail Pleasure class, and the Jr. Horse Trail Obstacle class. Congratulations to Gail and Charlie, her trainer, on their Men’s Trail Pleasure High Point award and their third place in 2 and 3 yo conformation. She is owned by Scott and Barrie Hughes of Bailey, CO.
Even though Erin’s spotted trail horse, Miller’s Scout, was sold mid-season, he did so well, earned the high point award for that division.
Doug and Jill Drenik had a shining star in their line-up this year as well. Storm Warning’s Thunder won many blues in the trail pleasure division. He also had the ability to show well in conformation and trail obstacle which led him to his RMH International wins and to become the 2006 Rea Swan Versatility Award recipient. WooHoo! Thunder also placed reserve in the High Point Trail Pleasure division.
Congratulations as well to FR Apollo, also owned by Doug and Jill for his second place Yearling Colt Conf. High Point Award.
It was a thrill to watch Shannon Lorance this year as she came and worked her horse, Lucky Charm. They made a great team. They faced stiff competition at the RMH International where Shannon went on to win the Ashley Hytry versatility award for the second year. Shannon is such a delightful young lady and what skill she has as a rider!
Another individual we have watched grow in her horsemanship this year is Judy Brummer. She has gained knowledge, confidence, skill. She and Erin have become quite a team and they have had a great time on their journey. I’ll never forget watching Judy and Erin ride Lady double, bareback, with a halter (no less) through the obstacle course at the farm. When Lady started to side pass toward the mailbox, Judy gave a little squeeze and Lady moved (just like she thought she was supposed to) . . . right out from under them both. Legs went flying and it looked like a cartoon. Fortunately, everyone came up laughing and it was a real hoot. It has been Lady’s versatility that we have so enjoyed watching develop. As a Country Trail Pleasure mare she’s had many skills that aided her in competition and she put them to good use this year. At the RMH International, in tough competition, she rose to the top to be the Sam Tuttle Memorial Award winner - the highest honor bestowed by the RMHA. Congratulations t Erin, Judy, and Lady (and Michael too, for putting up with the girls). Lady also placed reserve UMH High Point in CTP Mares and reserve in the CTP Championship. Judy won first place in the Amateur CTP High Point division.
The year has been memorable in many other ways as well. Early in the spring (it was so cold, I don’t think it was really spring at all) Charlie displayed his knowledge of starting horses by winning the Mountain Horse Trainers’ Challenge. Way to go!
Another highlight was Barb’s Stormy Knight ‘s designation of the first Platinum Versatility Merit Award Recipient. What an outstanding honor for Don and Nancy! The Merit Program is really very beneficial. It is a way of tracking horses’ success in a permanent format. Let us know if you need help or info on the program.
Stoner Ridge Farm saw the development of our Internship and Apprenticeship programs in 2006. We encourage you to let folks know about our programs. We also trademarked our Foundation First Mountain Horse Training TM philosophy - with Don’s help. The Judging Clinic at Murfreesboro was well attended and provided much information for our judges. Many of us attended The Road to the Horse in Murfreesboro to see Stacy Westfall win the challenge. (Unfortunately, the event is sold out for 2007.) Robert and Erin went to CA for their first clinic at the Rocky Mountain gathering there. It was a fantastic opportunity for them.
We had a great time trail riding in TN at the Run for the Roses in May. The fellowship was fantastic. (We should probably start thinking about making plans for that trip.) Not long after that we showed at our first annual Ladies Auxiliary show. In September, the Mountain Rhythm Riders performed in Virginia. They did a great job!
The three association shows at the end of the year provided a time for all our horses to shine. After the push of the August, September, and October shows, there was that November wedding. We continue to be so thankful for your support of Erin and Charlie. . . and for Stoner ridge Farm as well. We couldn’t ask for better clients or better friends.
Well, that just about brings us up to the New Year. We have lots of goals and yes, a dream or two for 2007. We hope you’ll join us for the good times, good horses, and good friends that SRF has become well know for. We wish everyone a prosperous and happy New Year!
Remember . . .
It’s time to renew your association
memberships.
