. . .and suddenly, it’s fall

 2007 RMH International

The week of the Rocky Mountain International turned out to be a great week of fellowship for SRF and our clients. Most clients who have show horses were able to come. Barrie Hughes set up her booth on the concourse right behind our box seats so we were able to visit throughout the show. Laurie and Rick had stalls beside us so we were able to be with them too. Doug and Jill got a couple of stalls so they could bring Echo and Thunder to ride around the grounds. Steve, Brenda, Nancy & Frank, and Don & Nancy among others all had a great week.

We also got to see several folks we hadn’t seen for a long time. It seems that the show has become a time for everyone to renew acquaintances. We see folks we’ve sold horses to and bought horses from. We check and see how they’re doing and often can’t believe how the children have grown . . . .

We enjoy you folks so much and appreciate everything you do help showing horses run smoothly and be so much fun for us. A very special thanks has to go to Brenda Watson who brought all the fantastic food on Wednesday. It is so good to have all that home cookin’ after a few days of ‘horse show’ food. It was simply delicious - Thank you, thank you, thank you. Nancy and Don brought snacks and drinks and many others brought goodies for us too.

The show went well for SRF and our clients. As always, we enjoy working toward the special awards. For the fourth year in a row, we’ve won the Rea Swan Versatility Award - three times with Barb’s Stormy Knight and once with Storm Warning’s Thunder. Last year we also won the Sam Tuttle Memorial Award with Legendary Lady. Erin and Lady have had a very special bond. They’ve grown up together in a way - Erin as an outstanding, sensitive trainer, and Lady as the ‘Little Engine that Could.’ What a genuine thrill it was to watch Judy Brummer win, not only, the Charles Kilburn AOT award but to win the Trail Pleasure Championship and the Sam Tuttle herself as an Amateur Owned and Trained entry. Check out their web site (under Bragging) to read the whole story. It is easy to get to if you go to the UMH site and click on their farm, EmDee Mountain horses. Congratulations Judy!!

We have established some powerful traditions here at SRF. Trail Obstacle has become something quite special for us. A gentleman we didn’t even know came up to Robert after he won trail obstacle this year and said, “That was just about as slick a performance as I’ve ever seen.” Woo Hoo!

Another trainer that has established himself as an excellent trail obstacle competitor is Charlie. This year, he competed four horses in a class of 42 entries and got 2nd, 4th, 5th, and 9th - that is a pretty outstanding fete. For the second year in a row, Charlie has also won the Water Glass Class. This year spectators were entertained during the wait to tie the class by Charlie and Ross Rote from Shooting Star Ranch. Ross’s display with his lasso was pretty impressive. When asked (dared?) Charlie got into the act by standing on the back of Sands of Time. Not to be outdone, he borrowed Ross’s rope and twirled it over his head while standing up on his horse’s back. After the fun and games, both men shook hands and Sands of Time was announced the winner of the class. It was great fun to watch, but I’m glad it was Charlie instead of me out there. It was one of the highlights of the show.

Another highlight was watching Brian and Pepper win the Western Grand Championship. It was Brian’s first win of that caliber and we were so happy for him. While Erin couldn’t help but wish she was out there riding herself, she cheered Brian on and was very proud of him as well.

One other outstanding moment was watching Derby Blue in the Weanling Grand Championship. He stood well and looked so awesome. We were just thrilled when Charlie’s number was called. Robert has been working Blue but with the timing of the classes it worked out better for Charlie to show him. Blue is a Grand Champion by a Grand Champion. How cool is that?

I know we have the best group of clients in the world. Thanks so much for all you’ve done and continue to do for us. The support you give all of us is truly fantastic. Thanks for everything and congratulations on those awesome horses!

UMH News

On Saturday, October 6th, UMH will have their annual trail ride at the Equestrian Center on Kiddville Rd. in Winchester. A 10:00 trail ride is planned with a fish fry to follow. Bruce and Vanessa Crowe will be hosts. Give us a call if you need directions. We’ll look forward to seeing you there.

It is the time of the year that plans are beginning for the 2008 show season. Your input is needed to help refine the current program or to make any changes you see that are necessary. There has been discussion about including more amateur classes and/or trying to divide amateur classes into more experienced/less experienced categories with a non-pro division. Call SRF or the UMH office with your suggestions for next year.

Erin

Three weeks ago, Erin experienced a fall from her horse. We all thought it was a minor occurrence. She had some bumps and a few bruises but was back riding the next day. The following day, she noticed a soreness in her ribs so she took a few days off and was right back in the saddle. About two weeks after her fall, she was riding again and felt a ’pop’ on her left side. She went for x-rays and discovered that she had a couple of broken ribs. Needless to say, she’s been taking it easy for the last few weeks while they heal. She must be one tough cookie to keep right on going. After a follow up x-ray we found out that Erin had actually broken 5 ribs. She’s even tougher than we thougt.

Erin did make good use of her time at the show by having a booth for her jewelry and yarn. It won’t be long until she is as good as new

An occasional winner looks to success

to validate the performance, but a champion

looks to the performance

as a validation of success.

KMSHA International

The final show of the season is fast approaching—the KMSHA International. We will be taking several horses and are hoping for good results. Last year’s show was a big success for SRF’s clients.

The Horse Park in autumn is a great place to be. We’ll all hope for great weather! We should be in barn 9 and 10 again this time. As always we’ll be competing for some of those top awards.

On your invoice, I’ve asked Erin (who has been working in the office for me) to bill for the stall charge of $150. All entries will be invoiced after the show along with the partial tack stall and bedding.

The show will begin this year on Monday, October 15th and run through Saturday the 20th. There are many classes in which to compete. See your latest magazine or the KMSHA web site for additional information. Remember, you’ll need membership cards, rider cards and copies of your papers at this show. I’ll take care of entries. Come if you can. We’ll have a blast!

Congratulations

Steve
Congratulations to Steve Heuslein on his purchase of two very nice geldings, two year old River Phoenix from Tammie Hillis and a yearling Venture gelding out of Lawson’s Pepper. These guys are going to be great. We can’t wait to see what they’ll grow up to become.

Two Horses
Author - unknown

Just up the road from my home is a field, with two horses in it.

From a distance, each horse looks like any other horse. But if you stop your car,

or are walking by, you will notice something quite amazing....

Looking into the eyes of one horse will disclose that he is blind. His owner has chosen not to have him put down, but has made a good home for him.

This alone is amazing.

If you stand nearby and listen, you will hear the sound of a bell.
Looking around for the source of the sound,

you will see that it comes from the smaller horse in the field.

Attached to the horse's halter is a small bell.
It lets the blind friend know where the other horse is, so he can follow.
As you stand and watch these two friends,
you'll see that the horse with the bell is always checking on the blind horse,
and that the blind horse will listen for the bell and then slowly walk
to where the other horse is,
trusting that he will not be led astray.

When the horse with the bell returns to the shelter of the barn each evening,
it stops occasionally and looks back,
making sure that the blind friend isn't too far behind to hear the bell.

Like the owners of these two horses,
God does not throw us away just because we are not perfect

or because we have problems or challenges.
He watches over us and even brings others into our lives
to help us when we are in need.

Sometimes we are the blind horse
being guided by the little ringing bell of those who God places in our lives.
Other times we are the guide horse, helping others to find their way....

Good friends are like that ... you may not always see them,

but you know they are always there.

Please listen for my bell and I'll listen for yours. And remember...

Be kinder than necessary - everyone you meet is fighting
some kind of battle.

Live simply,
Love generously,
Care deeply,
Speak kindly....
Leave the rest to God.

Several new horses are expected at the farm in the coming months.  Some horses will go home to be enjoyed exclusively by their owners and some will be turned out to enjoy living life with other members of the herd.  It is a time of vision for the future as well as a time of thanksgiving and appreciation.
